Ferry Facts: The Stamp Event
Lighthouse Stamp RevealedThis past Monday -- August 16, 2021 -- several Delaware dignitaries came to the Ferry's Finger Pier in Lewes in the morning for a formal reveal of the new lighthouse stamps being issued by the United States Post Office. Lewes Mayor Ted Becker hosted the festivities while representatives from the Delaware River & Bay Lighthouse Foundation spoke of the history of the lighthouse and the journey leading up to its preservation and its inclusion on the lighthouse stamp series.
Several other dignitaries spoke in support of their preservation efforts including U.S. Senator Tom Carper; Delaware State Senator Ernie Lopez; and Delaware Speaker of the House, Representative Pete Schwartzkopf. The event was also attended by several DRBA and CMLF colleagues including Executive Director Tom Cook and former DRBA Commissioner Bill Lowe for whom the finger pier is now named.
As reported in a past Ferry Facts issue, the new stamp series spotlights the Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse along with four other iconic Mid-Atlantic Lighthouses and is historic on many levels.

Lewes Post Office Celebration
This was the second local post office celebration within the decade. In August 2013, the downtown Lewes Post Office celebrated 100 years in its current building with local citizens donating to landscaping upgrades around the building.
As a bonus to the 2021 event, Lewes Post Office representatives were on hand to sell sheets of the new stamps to the attending public. For those who purchased a sheet on site, the team put the Harbor of Refuge stamp on a special 100th anniversary envelope and stamped it on site to create a collector's item all for the standard price of the sheet of stamps.
Immediately after the event Senator Carper tweeted about the experience.
Carper was also quoted on WDEL.com as saying: "'I am delighted that this pride of the First State is now being celebrated nationally by the Postal Service. The Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse is not just a beautiful landmark, it’s still a working lighthouse, aiding ships off of our coast. This is a proud day for Delaware and the many supporters and volunteers who work so hard to continue the storied legacy of our lighthouse."
Special thanks to DRBA Management Analyst TJ Murray for the great photos of the event.
