Learn On The Job

Did you know you don’t always need prior experience to start at some jobs at the Ferry? Many crew and landside positions allow you to learn on the job, and working during the season is a great way to test if you like working in marine transportation while learning about marine career opportunities.

Several local men and women who never previously considered careers outside of the more traditional fields of hospitality, education and health care found they truly loved work on or by the water once they started working at the Ferry.

Captain Sharon Urban enjoys working at the Ferry and is a very well respected leader in her field.

On-The-Job Training

Did you know that we train on-the-job for many of the positions at the Ferry? That includes training prior landlubbers the ropes in becoming marine crew — starting as ordinary seaman and gaining the knowledge to potentially rise through the ranks.

In marine lingo – that’s called being a Hawsepiper. Two of our captains first started with us in food & retail positions before moving on board as marine crew. Could you be next?
